Still working to establish who they really are, the Lobos will play their second game of the season tonight, hosting the NNM Eagles. The Eagles come in 3-1 overall, having most recently beaten Southwest 58-53. Their loss was 89-41 to Benedictine Mesa.
There has been a lot of mention the former Lobo JR Giddens is the Eagles coach, but they also have a player on the roster with a brief link to UNM. 6’2” junior Ni’Asia McIntosh from Gallup had originally verbally committed to UNM, but never arrived, eventually going to NNM instead. She has not played in the first four games.
The NNM team plays about 10 deep, but the starters are playing about 30 minutes per game. They start two seniors, two juniors, and a freshman point guard—only senior center Kristen Davis (#4) is over 5’7”. She has also been their main scoring threat averaging 10 points a game, with 5 rebounds. Point guard Miranda Salazar from Espanola, and guard Chris’aleePatterson are the others main scorers.
Although they have averaged only 59.3 ppg, they play at a fast pace. They are averaging 67 shots a game (one third from three point range) but only making 345 of them. They have struggled rebounding (-3.5 per game) but are +5 per game on turnovers.
All the team stats were hurt significantly by the loss to Benedictine.
