The University of New Mexico officially announced the hiring of Richard Pitino as the next men’s basketball head coach on Tuesday morning.
Pitino was let go by Minnesota on Monday after spending eight seasons with the Golden Gophers. During that time, Minnesota went 141-123 and made two trips to the NCAA Tournament, as well as one to the NIT Championship.

“My wife Jill, our children and I are very excited to join the Lobo Family,” read Pitino’s first official statement. “I want to extend my sincere thanks to President Stokes, Eddie Nuñez and David Williams for extending this opportunity. Lobo Basketball holds a special place in the hearts of New Mexicans, and I cannot wait to get started.”
Pitino, the 22nd head coach for the New Mexico men’s basketball program, will likely have an introductory press conference Thursday.
