The regular season did not go smoothly for the Lobos, who opened up strong with a win over the then-No. 22 Seattle but then went on to finish with a 4-11-1 overall record. Their 2-5-1 conference record allowed then to barely sneak into the C-USA tournament. This is the 10th straight year the Lobos appear in a conference tournament.
New Mexico now gets to start its “second season” as the No. 7-seed Lobos take on the No. 2- seed Old Dominion Monarchs. When the two teams met earlier this season, ODU left Albuquerque with a 2-1 victory.
The Monarchs finished the regular season with a 10-4-2 overall record and 6-2 in C-USA play. In the defense, junior goalkeeper Mertcan Akar tallied 40 saves in 16 games played. The attacking third is led by senior forward Max Wilschrey, who has recorded a total of 11 goals and six assists.
Wilschrey is one of two Monarchs who made it to the 2018 1st Team All-Conference. The other is senior midfielder Nike Klosterhalfen. Both players are from Germany,
New Mexico is represented in that same list by redshirt defender Tom Smart.
