Only 204 days remaining….
The Mountain West released the men’s basketball 2018-19 conference schedule on Monday. The announcement also included the 10-game MW Tournament which will go from March 13-16 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.
Starting Jan 2, each school will play nine games at home and nine on the road. They also get two bye dates each, Jan 30 and Feb 23 are the dates for the Lobos.
New Mexico’s first conference game will be on the road against Air Force on Jan 2. The Falcons finished last season in 9th place and fell to the No. 8 seed UNLV during the first round of the MW tournament. Meanwhile the Lobos entered the tournament as the No. 3 seed and made it to the championship.
While opening conference season against a relatively tame opponent, the Lobos will be at home three days later to host Nevada for their first home conference game of the season. During a press conference in May, UNM head coach Paul Weir stated that he believed Nevada would be the top team in the conference and everyone else would be working hard to catch up.
“When I saw the Nevada news, I think I’d been six months without Diet Coke, I popped a Diet Coke. It’s impressive,” he said.
Weir is not alone. CBS Sports even lists Nevada as possibly the No. 6 team in the nation. The Lobos’s will take on the Wolf Pack on the road on Feb. 9.
The Lobos will close out conference play with a match on the road, this time against the Wyoming Cowboys, a team New Mexico faced during the semifinals of the tournament in March.
CBS Sports Network and ESPN still need to finish with national television selections (expected to be done by mid-August). After this, AT&T SportsNet and the Mountain West Network will make their picks. Once all of this is done, specific game times will be announced.
