University of New Mexico men’s basketball senior Anthony Mathis will be returning for one more season as a Lobo. The news broke on Wednesday afternoon.
Head coach Paul Weir asked to meet in person to tell him he was officially eligible to extend his college basketball career in New Mexico. Mathis was shocked when he heard the news.

UNM requested a waiver based on one of his season’s under former coach Craig Neal. He will officially be listed as a “redshirt senior.” Mathis reacted to posts on Twitter and then made his own statement.
“I’m incredibly blessed and fortunate to be able to play another year of college basketball and continue my academic journey,” he wrote. “I look forward to getting back on the court and starting graduate school.”
Some of the 6’3″ guard’s accomplishments include:
- UNM record for most 3-point field goals in a conference season (66)
- UNM record for most 3-pointers in a single season (106)
- Two-time All-Mountain West Team honoree
- Named to the 2017 NABC Honors Court and earned a spot on the 2016 Academic All-Conference list
The three-point specialist will enter next season with a 25-game streak scoring at least one shot from beyond the arc. Him returning means the Lobos won’t be losing their lead scorer, as he is on the top of the stats sheet averaging 14.4 points per game.
“Anthony is an amazing player but he is an even better person to have helping to put this program back where it belongs,” said Weir on a statement. “I am looking forward to the upcoming season and all that we can accomplish with him back for another year.”
