The University of New Mexico men’s soccer team picked up its first clean sheet of the season with a 2-0 victory over the Florida Atlantic Owls on Saturday. This win on the road broke a three-game losing streak.
Freshman goalkeeper Alex Fetterly made his second career start, while Billy Jones and Simon Spangenberg scored their first goals of the season. The Lobos are now 3-5 overall and 1-1 in Conference USA.
When it came to opportunities created, both teams look similar in the stats sheet. UNM barely led 12-11 in shots, and 6-4 in shots on goal. However, the Lobos took advantage of their chances early and got their first goal during the 10th minute.
Spangenberg took a cross from Nick Taylor and converted from inside the box. It’s been a good week for the senior midfielder, as a few days ago it became known that Spangenberg was selected as one of 30 candidates for the 2018 Senior CLASS Award.

The second goal also came from an assist by Taylor. The sophomore took the free kick that allowed Jones to score in the 24th minute.
It wasn’t a secret that after a couple disappointing results, head coach Jeremy Fishbein was looking to make a few adjustments to the lineup. Saturday proved to be successful with two different players stepping up in the offense and Fetterly keeping the net empty. However, the team will really be put to the test next Wednesday when the Lobos return to Albuquerque.
“Our challenge now will be to continue to get better,” Fishbein said on the press release. “We’ll face a great test against Saint Mary’s that’s currently 9-0, one of the few undefeated teams in the country, so we’ll be taking the next few days to get ready for that test.”
