New Mexico lost its last game of the regular season 88-81 to Wyoming last Saturday. The Lobos get a rematch against the Cowboys during the first round of the Mountain West Tournament on Wednesday.
Wyoming comes in as the # 10 seed in the conference with an 8-23 overall, 4-14 MW. The Cowboys have not done well when not playing at home, having a 1-11 away record (1-2 neutral). But their record might not represent their performance as of late.
During their last game of the regular season, they shot at almost 52 percent from the field. They have also taken care of the ball by collecting 10 or fewer turnovers in three-straight games.
Senior guard Justin James is the team’s strongest weapon. He leads in scoring, rebounding and assists. But his performance is not just good enough for Wyoming, James also leads the conference in overall scoring averaging 21.8 points per game (No. 23 in the nation). The media voted him into the All-Mountain West First Team. Coaches voted him into the Second Team.

New Mexico comes in as the #7 seed with a 13-17 overall record and 7-11 in the MW. The team counts the most on Anthony Mathis, who the coaches named to the All-Mountain West Third Team. This is his second year in a row with that recognition. He is the team’s most consistent scorer, averaging 14.7 points per game. One of his strengths is three-pointers. Mathis ranks No. 18 in the nation averaging 3.4 per game. He tied the UNM record for most three-pointers in a season with 102.
