The 2018 season keeps slipping for the University of New Mexico men’s soccer team.
Their 2-1 loss to Loyola Marymount on Tuesday night ended the Lobos’ chance to finish the regular season with a winning record. The Lobos would have to win every single one of their remaining games to finish 8-8 overall.
LMU (3-7) got ahead during the 17th minute when Leo Zulli recorded his first goal of the season from a CJ Neville assist. The Lobos were down 1-0 after the first 45 minutes, but Nick Taylor evened things out during the 64th minute as he got through the defense and scored a goal unassisted.

Head coach Jeremy Fishbein said he was proud of the way his players reacted after the first LMU goal and how they came back during the second half.
“We had the game in hand but we keep making mental mistakes, just momentary mistakes, that affect the outcome of the games. I felt the guys deserved better tonight,” he said.
A minute after Taylor’s goal, Antoine Vial had to leave the game with a red card. Even with a man down, the Lobos still managed to push the game into overtime for the second time of the season. However, both times the Lobos have gone into overtime have resulted in a loss.
The winning goal came two minutes into overtime when LMU drew a penalty kick. Sophomore Kris Fourcand successfully converted to register his third goal of the season.
On paper, New Mexico was not bad. The Lobos outshot LMU 17-7 (5-4 on goal). However, mistakes during key moments have cost the team a few games this season, including last week when UNM lost 1-0 to the then-No. 10 Saint Mary’s by making a defensive mistake 20 seconds before regulation time was over.
Tuesday was the sixth loss at home for the Lobos. They hit the road this weekend for a Saturday match against the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
