Eddie Nuñez gives statement on the future of Bob Davie

The University of New Mexico Director of Athletics Eddie Nuñez released a statement on Friday evening saying football coach Bob Davie was not going anywhere. The team finished the year 3-9 for the second straight season and Nuñez had remained quiet about the future of the coach.

“After meeting with Coach Davie, both he and I are looking forward to the 2019 season.  Recruiting is already in full swing.  Since taking over in 2012, the team has set records in the classroom, won a division title and qualified for two bowl games.  Neither Coach Davie nor I were satisfied with the results of last season.  Coach Davie and his staff, as well as our department, are striving to make the 2019 season a success, and that process has already started.
Coach Davie wants to be at New Mexico and wants nothing more than a program that our University and our fans can be proud of.  He is committed to working tirelessly to return UNM to the level of success in 2015 and 2016.  We both are excited for the upcoming 2019 season.”

When the statement came out, a lot of people reacted on social media. One of them was outside linebacker Rhashaun Eptin, who led the Lobos in sacks this season. Eptin recently made the announcement that he will be transferring schools.
While he didn’t write anything himself, Epting liked a tweet that read the following: “Lol you know it’s BS when it says “Coach Davie wants to be at New Mexico.”

Two days before Epting’s announcement, teammate Marcus Hayes said he was leaving. Hayes is the redshirt freshman safety who led the nation in yards per punt return.
Davie is under contract through the 2021 season. Prior to him becoming head coach in 2012, the Lobos had gone 3-37 in their previous 40 games.
