The University of New Mexico men’s basketball team might have found its newest assistant coach in Dan McHale. The news began circulating on Thursday afternoon and the school made it official a couple hours later.
McHale was most recently with Eastern Kentucky University and would be taking the spot left open by Chris Harriman, who left to Cal earlier this year.

McHale began his job as EKU’s 20th head coach on April 2015. His contract was supposed to run through April 2019, but on February 2018 the school announced that he would be let go earlier. McHale posted a 38-55 overall record during his time with the Colonels.
“Dan is a tremendous addition to our team. His blend of acumen and enthusiasm will be a great injection into our program,” said New Mexico head coach Paul Weir in the official UNM statement. “His experience as a Division I head coach, at the highest levels of college basketball, and in our style of play make him a perfect addition for us. We are lucky to have someone of his experience joining our team.”
