@Scott -- Maybe this will be the end of Bubba/Chef Boy-ar-Dee forever, never to be heard from again. (Sort of like Paul Weir)

I really don't feel like this is the year to start charging people to be a part of this site. The site is finally getting good again now that lobo basketball is good again. I haven't seen this much excitement in the site since Alford left. Tons of people are posting again, commenting again and new users are constantly checking it out. Give it a year or two to further build up the membership before you start charging. If not you are just going to lose a lot of people and have the same 10 people post every day.

Your statement above is exactly why the fee should be happening now, not in two years.  If you want sustained success for our athletic PROGRAMS, there is no better time to support than now.  After reading how we place in the bottom of the MWC in financial support, changing that should be priority #1.  I do not EVER want to revert to the crappy past decade of Lobo hoops.  Ever.

You nailed it!  Remember this isn't about making people pay for the Lair. It is about building the NIL and sustaining the momentum of one of the most respected collectives out there.

@nino-lobo Your post is misleading. It should read something like… ‘20 ideas to help you REDIRECT $20’. One is not saving money, if it’s taken away from something, only to be SPENT on something else, 😂

Agree this will severely limit the POVs and discussion on the site.
I know some might find this a good thing, but I would miss the posts from opponents fans.  They sure as hell aren’t going to pay $20 to post
Not really interested in reading the posts of only a select few.  Not saying the owner cannot do what he wishes- it’s his toy.  Just not a fan of this decision.

$20 per month * 12 months = $240 per year

365 days per year / $240 = 66 cents per day

As for conversing with opposing fans, if that’s appealing and they don’t want to pay to post here why not simply go post on their site(s)?

Thanks for the help, I'm only trying to illustrate how easy it would be to scrape up the scratch to enjoy the site. All these sob stories are bring me down. I think @digital-lobo just posted its like .66 cents a day. If you are seriously a Lobo fan, I think you can manage that no matter how limited your income is, no?

yes you won’t have casual posters.
The majority of members don’t post.

when was the last post you saw from an “opponent fan”?

@nino-lobo saying someone isn’t a Lobo supporter because they are scraping by as it is, isn’t helpful. I empathize with the financial pinch that people are going through right now.

I will not demonize them for not prioritizing their money according to the priorities being set by some on this board. If people decide they will not, or can not find that extra scratch, to fund UNM athletes, then that's for them to decide. I will not fault them in any way.
As long as they still find some way to support UNM (season tickets, attending games), then we should applaud them for that, not tell them they’re not doing enough.

I can easily afford the 20$ a month that this site will cost me, to make a post like this. But if someone says they can’t, we need to respect that too, not shame them into having to financially help UNM pay for better athletes.

This site will shrink in posts, but should bounce back after some current members initial shock and anger of feeling forced to pay for them to post their thoughts and opinions… Im still undecided about how I feel about this. But then I spend far more of my time on the MW board than I do here, during football and basketball season, because I like the banter and interaction with other fan bases.

I’m still mourning the loss of amateur athletics too. Semi-pro college sports is still something I’ve got to get use to.

I'm not "demonizing" anyone with my post. I was simply pointing out some ways to find an extra 20 spot by the end of the month. Sorry for trying to find a solution to a simple problem. Drinking tap water not only saves money, it saves the environment 😉

@zygote what are you talking about? I am not saying anything about not supporting the program. I 1000% contribute and have since probably 05 or 06. I just think when you are finally getting excitement building on the site again to suddenly nickel and dime people doesn't make sense to me. I would be interested to hear how many of the other school fan sites charge? And I don't mean the national sites because I get those but actual school messaging boards like this. If you tell me we are the only major program that isn't charging then ok cool. Just looking for some data to back it up thats all.

@bgupton here's some data... each thread topic has a user tracker, and on average posts, there is about 10-15 users posting. On a really good post there is about 30-40 users involved. With that data there's an average of about 20-25 users that post consistently. Most members don't post they just read and from my understanding reading posts will still be free of charge.😁

@nino-lobo For data i just meant if we are the only major school that doesn't charge right now. Also to your point there isn't a lot going on right now in lobo athletics. I wonder what the # of users were etc during the actual bball season. I have to imagine its a lot higher.. If not then why nickel and dime the 40 people that regularly post to make an extra couple thousand dollars.

I'm Back.  After a long illness and recovery (thank you God), I feel like my old self again.  4 weeks of Kidney Failure was a bitch!  All is good today and the transplanted kidney is doing well again.  Thank you UNMH!

I pay $x for Netflix, $x for YouTube Premium (no commercials), and $x for Prime Music.  These are my vices as is the Lair for entertainment.  I will gladly pay for the Lair's service and entertainment value. I have been a member since August 12, 2007, with 1483 posts and I will continue to be a member.

Perhaps a compromise might be to have a short ala carte  membership, say $3:00-$4.00 that gets you a 72 window to post.  This would allow you to pay for the service on a strategic/desired basis.  So when a big game comes/and or you just have to jump in on a topic and post, just pay the $3-$4.00 and do so.

Here is a great feature that my credit union offers that helps me save money from debit card transactions without me having to do anything and these roundup transfers more than cover my recurring 505SVA contributions which for me is more than $20 a month by the way.

https://www.rbfcu.org/banking/really-free-checking-account/round-up

Full disclosure. This credit union is located in and around San Antonio Texas where I lived between 1990 -1995. However, it’s no issue that I live in Albuquerque because anything that I need to do with them I can do online and/or over the phone. They are hands down the best financial institution that I’ve ever been a member of.

Edit: I rarely use ATM machines. However, on the rare occasions that I do using my debit card from this CU I generally don’t have to pay an ATM withdrawal fee as long I use an ATM  that is on the Plus system which we have many in the 505.

why keep a free site open for only 40 people, that's the real question? I'm sure you know it's not free to keep this site rolling. Shouldn't those of us with the loudest opinions put our $ where our mouths are? BTW most of the regulars seem to think I have multiple accounts so that 40 could possibly be a smaller number 🤔 😅 😳

Discussions with opponents fans usually only happen leading up to or following a game during the season. They don't haapen as much as they used to. Though it's nice to get those perspectives they do...

anyone know if this is tax deductible?  I sent a note to Kurt weeks ago and never got a reply.

The 505 is applying for 501(c)(3) status. It’s my understanding status is still pending. One received: There's financial incentive for Americans to give generously to charity: when you donate to an IRS-qualified 501(c)(3) public charity, including Fidelity Charitable, you are able to take an income tax charitable deduction.

Finally, if you own a business and work it properly (MUST check with your OWN accountants), some dollars can be written of as an advertising expense.
